Solo Adventure Offbeat

Rahul's solo circuit through Spiti's most dramatic landscapes — from the ancient Ki Monastery to the hidden village of Kibber, riding local buses and sharing meals with monks. Raw, cold, and absolutely spectacular.

🏔 Day 1 · Kaza

Arrived in Kaza — 3,800m above ordinary life

Bus from Shimla took 14 hours. Could not feel my feet. Worth every numb minute. The first view of Spiti river winding through a bone-dry gorge made everything disappear. Stayed at a ₹350/night homestay. Host made yak butter tea. Acclimatisation day tomorrow.

🕌 Day 3 · Ki Monastery

Ki Monastery — 1000-year-old silence

Woke at 5am to catch prayer horns echoing off the valley walls. No other tourists at that hour. A monk let me sit with him through the morning puja. These are the unscripted moments that solo travel hands you. Do not sleep in.

🏘 Day 5 · Kibber

Kibber Village — world's highest motorable village

Kibber has 82 families and approximately 200 dogs. I know because I counted. The resident snow leopard spotting guide offered a 3-hour walk at ₹500. Didn't see a leopard. Did see the Milky Way for the first time unobstructed. 10/10 would return.

🏞 Day 8 · Chandratal

Chandratal Lake — the moon lake

Trekked 6km from the road. Tent stayed up despite 40kph gusts (barely). The lake is a surreal mirror of blue and clouds. Temperature -4°C at night. Cooked Maggi on a camp stove. Solo camping here is one of the most peaceful and terrifying things I've done. Loved every second.

The less-photographed sibling of Spiti. Rahul spent eight days cycling between small farming villages, documenting the forgotten gompa circuit of Lahaul.

🚲 Day 1 · Keylong

Keylong — District HQ nobody talks about

Rented a Hero Splendor for ₹600/day — best decision. Lahaul is meant to be ridden slowly. The road from Manali over Rohtang to Keylong alone justifies the entire trip. Mountain desert meets green river flats. Keylong has one good dhabha. I ate there four times.

🏯 Day 4 · Trilokinath

Trilokinath Temple — Hindus and Buddhists share a deity

One of only two temples in India where Hindus and Tibetan Buddhists worship the same idol. The syncretic mythology here is fascinating — Shiva is Avalokiteshvara depending on who you ask. The caretaker explained it beautifully over a shared lunch. No guidebook told me this.

🐟 Day 2 · Tirthan River

Trout Fishing — the purest mornings

The Tirthan river runs clear enough to count the stones. Caught two trout with the homestay uncle — both released. The act of fishing here is meditative, not sport. Stood waist-deep in 8°C water for two hours. Would do it every single day if I could.
