Day 3 · Chiang Mai
Elephant Nature Park — ethical is non-negotiable

There are 200+ elephant camps in Chiang Mai. Only a handful are ethical. Elephant Nature Park is one — no rides, no hooks, rescued elephants in a natural habitat. I spent 8 hours feeding, bathing, and watching elephants be elephants. At one point a 3-month-old calf fell asleep with its head on my knee. I am not the same person I was before that moment. Do not ride elephants.

Day 7–9 · Pai
Motorbike Loop — Solo & Terrifying & Perfect

Rented a scooter in Pai for 3 days. Drove the Mae Hong Son loop alone. 762 curves on one road (there is a sign). I almost turned back twice. I did not. The Lod Cave, the bamboo bridge, the mountain top Chinese village, the rice fields at golden hour — all mine. All completely silent except for wind. Solo travel gives you scenes nobody else occupies.

🧘
Day 12–16 · Koh Lanta
Yoga Retreat + Slow Beach Days

Koh Lanta is what Koh Phi Phi was before Instagram discovered it. Long Beach, no clubs, good coffee, a 5-day yoga retreat (₹4,000 all-inclusive) with 12 women from 8 countries. We hiked the national park south tip, kayaked to mangrove channels, and cooked Thai food one evening. Last night: long table dinner on the beach, no phones. The friendships made in 5 days of shared yoga mats outlasted the tan.

Day 2 · Chiang Mai
Khao Soi & the Nimman Night Market

Khao Soi is northern Thailand's gift to the world — egg noodles, crispy noodles, coconut curry, lime, shallots, pickled mustard greens. Eat it at Khao Soi Khun Yai (tiny, wooden tables, aunty runs it since 1984, ₹120 a bowl). Walked the Nimman Art & Design market alone at 9pm. Completely comfortable, well-lit, no issues. Posted this because 80% of my DMs ask "is it safe to walk alone at night?" In Chiang Mai's Nimman: yes, absolutely.

Day 1 · Chiang Mai
Temple Circuit — Doi Suthep at Sunrise

Doi Suthep temple at 6am. Songthaew shared with two monks and a grandmother selling jasmine garlands. No other tourists. The city below was still misty. The monks sang the morning puja. I sat on the steps, cross-legged, for 45 minutes. This is why you wake up before the tour buses. Chiang Mai has 300 temples — you do not need to see them all. See three properly.

Budget Breakdown
16 Days in Thailand — Full Spend Breakdown

Total: ₹74,800 solo (flights ₹28k + stay ₹18k + food ₹9k + activities ₹12k + transport ₹7.8k). Female-specific savings: female-only dorm beds save ₹200–400/night vs private. Biggest value: Elephant Nature Park (₹3,500) vs the 4-hour tourist camp (same price, worse ethics). Full spreadsheet in link-in-bio. Solo travel is not more expensive; it is differently expensive.

🛡 Solo Female Safety Summary — Indonesia (Yogyakarta + Flores)
Night Safety
★★★★☆
Yogyakarta city centre very safe; Flores smaller towns — exercise usual caution
Cultural Dress
★★★★★
Cover knees/shoulders at temples; carry sarong always
Solo Hiking
★★★☆☆
Book guide for volcano hikes (Kelimutu, Rinjani) — not solo
Overall Friendliness
★★★★★
Warmest country I have visited; people genuinely helpful
🏛
Day 2 · Yogyakarta
Borobudur — world's largest Buddhist temple at sunrise

The Borobudur sunrise ticket sells out weeks ahead. I booked 6 weeks early — ₹2,600 but absolutely worth it. 72 bell-shaped stupas, 2,672 relief panels, and at sunrise a sea of mist below and the volcano Merapi above. Was alone on the top tier for 40 minutes before other tourists arrived. The light changes every 4 minutes. I took 70 photographs. None of them capture it.

Day 8 · Komodo Island
Komodo Dragon Encounter

Two rangers with forked sticks. One 3-metre Komodo dragon that outweighs me and runs faster than I can sprint. Maintained respectful distance. The island is wild, dry, and strangely silent — only the sound of lizard claws on rock. Boat trip from Labuan Bajo ₹2,800/day shared. Solo female tip: join a small group boat (4–6 people) rather than private — better safety optics and fraction of the cost.

🌋
Day 10 · Flores
Kelimutu — three-coloured crater lakes at 4am

Three volcanic crater lakes. Three different colours — dark teal, turquoise, red-brown. The colours change year to year due to mineral composition shifts. I hiked with a guide (non-negotiable — the path is unlit before dawn) at 4am. We arrived at the rim as the first thin line of orange appeared over Flores. I have never felt more awake. Kelimutu is off most itineraries. Put it on yours.
